Cold Harbour and Land's End
A colleague asked me recently if I knew of somewhere called 'Cold Harbour' near Sutton Benger; he had come across an 1800s lease relating to 'a field in Cold Harbour', with other documents which mentioned Sutton Benger. I wasn't aware of anywhere with that name, but after some on-line searching I found it on the main road between Kington Langley and Langley Burrell - where the road dips and there are a couple of houses (including Steinbrook House). The dip in the road is where it crosses the Stein Brook - the other name for Chissell Brook, which forms the southern boundary of Sutton Benger parish.
I also found a mention of Cold Harbour in Kilvert's Diary, written by the Vicar of Langley Burrell. In 1872 the Vicar of Draycot Cerne, Charles Awdry, came to visit Kilvert one day in, and Kilvert 'walked back with him as far as Cold Harbour.'
Speaking of Langley Burrell, I had never heard of a 'Land's End' near here before this week. When I was researching 48 High Street I found that the Draper who lived there in 1891 had retired by 1901 and was living in 'Landsend, Langley Burrell'. Very confusing - but some more research showed me that the civil parish of Langley Burrell in the late 1800s and early 1900s included the area of Chippenham as far as the railway station!
