Who's coming to dinner at The Wellesley Arms?
The Wiltshire Times of 4 July 1925 records that there was 'The annual earth-stoppers' dinner at the Welllesley Arms, attended by His Grace the Duke of Beaufort'. There were the 'usual loyal toasts to the Duke and Duchess and the Hunt' together with songs, and the party were afterwards photographed - perhaps those photos are in somebody's archives somewhere ...
(PS. I wonder if that is an accidental spelling mistake in the newspapeer headline, or is it an amusing pun that I do not understand?)

The same newspaper records the death at the beginning of the week of Mr Brittain, aged 81. He was a 'native of Calne who had lived in the village for 57 years'. This was Alfred Brittain, whose name often appears in the records as 'Britton'. He had been the assistant baker, and then foreman, working for Jane Wright on Park Lane; he eventually took over as the village baker, and had died on 30th June.
