The 1576-1689 Map of Wiltshire
Page last updated: 3 July 2024, 9:55amThe 1576-1689 Saxton-Lea Map of Wiltshire
Wiltshire was surveyed by Christopher Saxton in 1576 and the first map was printed in 1579. In 1689 it was edited and reprinted by Philip Lea. He added the names and divisions of the Hundreds (the sub-divisions of the county) as well as several principal roads. This was the first map of Wiltshire to show roads - previous maps had only shown rivers.

'Sutton' and 'Dracot' are in the Malmesbury Hundred; they can be seen just to the left of the River Avon, which forms part of the boundary with the Damerham Hundred to the east. Note the archaic spelling of other villages, such as 'Segarye' and 'Mychaels Kyneton'.
