The Valuation Office Survey
Valuation Office Survey 1910-1915
A national Valuation Office Survey was carried out between 1910 and 1915. The survey provided a unique snapshot of land and property in the Edwardian era, assessing its worth, how it was used and by whom; and in so doing it painted a picture of society itself.
The survey took place as a result of a 1909-1910 Finance Act which provided for the levy and collection of a duty on land. Information was included for each property in ‘field books’ which were then associated with high-detail Ordnance Survey maps.
The following images provide extracts from the Survey for Sutton Benger and Draycot Cerne, which took place in 1910. The originals can be found in the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.
